Dorr Oil has been locally operated here in greater Manchester for more than 20 years. We’re your neighbors, and our primary focus is making sure you are safe when it comes to providing you with propane delivery, propane tank installation and propane equipment installation and service.
Another way we help you stay safe is by letting you know about propane safety and propane tank safety so you can protect your family and property.
Propane gas is naturally odorless, so during production an ingredient is added to give it a distinct odor so leaks can be detected. That smell is usually described as being like rotten eggs.
If you smell that rotten-egg odor, you need to know what to do. The directions below are necessary so you can protect lives and property, and must be followed as soon as you smell gas.
Put out any open flames, candles, cigarettes or other sources of ignition.
Get everyone out IMMEDIATELY.
Do not use thermostats, phones, electrical switches or appliances until you’re safely away.
Turn off the gas shutoff valve on the propane tank or cylinder if you can safely get to it.
Once you are safely away from the leak, call 911 and Dorr Oil.
Give emergency personnel and the propane service technicians time to check for escaped gas and do any needed repairs.
Even if you no longer smell gas, don’t try to go back to the site of the leak or turn on the propane supply valve.
Make sure a trained propane service technician repairs the leak, inspects all of the gas appliances and relights all pilots.
Wait until you get permission from emergency personnel or the service technician to return.
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) created the learning modules below so you can learn about safely using propane. Topics include propane heater safety, how to store and transport propane cylinders like the one for your BBQ grill and more!
